The Rostra Writing Contest

Writing Contest with MLC’s Rostra The Rostra is an online publication started and run by students of Mount Liberty College. The magazine aims to allow students to explore in writing the application of the wisdom of the past to the problems of today. Mount Liberty students are already engaged in that conversation, but the editors of The Rostra would like to invite high school students to participate as well. This is an invitation to submit an article for consideration for the Rostra Writing Contest for all high school-aged students. Submissions are due May 1, 2025. Winning entrants will have their article published in the Rostra and receive $100.

Submitted articles should be opinion or news pieces of 500 to 1,000 words. The article should use an inverted pyramid structure with the most important, relevant, and newsworthy information at the top, and the least important information at the bottom. The article should begin with a “lede.” All sources and quotations should be hyperlinked. Winning articles will go through the editing process before publication.

Here are some possible topics to consider (feel free to reach out for further explanations/resources connected to each topic):

– What did J.D. Vance have in mind when he used the term “common sense wisdom” in the VP debate? Was he thinking of Murray Rothbard, John Stuart Mill, or The Wisdom of Crowds of James Surowiecki?
– Is Pinterest the new commonplace book?
– Consider Mr. Beast’s philanthropy and the media’s backlash. What historical (perhaps literary) precedents are there?
– Why the world is closer to Huxley’s Brave New World than to Orwell’s 1984. Or is it?
– Is it true, as Donald Trump says, that other countries will bear the burden of his proposed tariffs? Did the Founding Fathers agree? How about Adam Smith and Frederic Bastiat?
